Riona Smith BiographyFRESH from her star turn in a critically acclaimed movie, Dublin actress Riona Smith is back with her head in the books.
Riona (16) has wowed audiences with her performance in the recent hit film '32A', a story is set in the 'in-between' time of a girl's life, when she is no longer a girl and not yet a woman.
Filmed in parts of Roscommon, Sligo and Dublin, and set in 1979, it's a bittersweet coming-of-age tale, touching on the truths of adolescence, first love, heartbreak, friendship debacles, peer pressure and family woes.
"It was really good filming with all the gang and they were all so nice. It was pretty different to what I expected I have to say," Riona told the Herald.
"I was a bit daunted going in to do the film especially with big stars like Aidan Quinn and Orla Brady but they were all very nice to me and I wouldn't mind working with any of them again in the future," she said.
The teenage Northsider has just entered her fifth year in secondary school and has been in the acting business for years.
"We shot the film in the summer of 2006 which was the summer after I had just finished second year and it took about six weeks. We spent five weeks in Dublin and then we went off to Sligo for a week to do the last bit.
"It was a great experience for me going away from home for the week to do it," she added.
"My character's name was Claire and she was kind of the feminist of the group. The film is about these four friends who go off to get their first bra and stuff but she's all shy and doesn't want to get it at the beginning," Riona explained.
However the talented teen maintains she is nothing like her alter ego in real life.
"I don't think I've really changed at all since doing the film, I'm still just me and that's just something I do for fun.
"There is no jealousy from any of my friends in school. They've all been really supportive and they all came to see the film with me and thought it was great.
"I think they're proud to have a friend who was in a big film more than anything," she added.
The ambitious young girl credits her family for helping her get to where she is today.
"My parents were very proud of me of course. Part of the film was actually set in the Grove club in Dublin which is where they met so they came along while I filming and thought it was great.
"I have one older sister who's also done some drama but she prefers to concentrate on music now, she's actually studying it in college at the moment," she said.
Riona has been involved in drama since she was just a child and first signed up to Kidskast Stage School ten years ago.
"I've done a few things over the years and it's been great training. I made loads of friends there.
"I'm back in school now but I still do drama classes and I'd definitely love it if another opportunity to do a film comes up in the future.
"I have no plans right now but we'll see what happens, hopefully something will come up," she said.
The stunning young actress lives in Swords with her family but with a CV like hers we're sure to be seeing her back on the small screen soon.
