Abigail Kirk was an ordinary enough sixteen-year-old growing up in today's Sydney. Full of energy and love-for-life, her only source of unhappiness was the resentment she felt for her father - he broke up her home, leaving her mother for another woman. So when her mother told her he was coming home, she couldn't understand and couldn't forgive either of them.

It was "the furry little girl: who started it all. Only Abigail noticed her watching the children playing the scary game they called "Beatie Bow", a game about some long dead ogre. When Abigail tried to speak to her she ran off.

Intrigued, Abigail followed.into the back streets of that part of Sydney known as The Rocks. At least it looked like The Rocks, but was it? Horrified, Abigail realised that somehow, through some eerie time shift, she had arrived in The Rocks of one hundred years ago.And "the furry little girl" was Beatie Bow.

Confused and lost, all Abigail knew for sure was that Beatie Bow's family wouldn't let her go home again. Why not? Why did they call her "The Stranger" - and what was "the Gift" they were all talking about in whispers?

But there were compensations for being unable to get back into her own time: like meeting the handsome Judah Bow.
